History
During the period 200 B.C. till 200 A.D. scribes describe dogs who are called 'Molossers'. There were two subtypes
1. A slim, agile molosser with a somewhat long head and a light till white color; predominantly used as a shepard dog.
2. A heavy build molosser with a mighty head and a short stomp snout in dark colors, who was a guard dog.
From Tibet and Peru heavy build dogs came to the
Roman Empire through Greece. These heavy build dogs where among other things used in the army.
They were in the front line with the men to trample the enemy. Because the dogs weren't invulnerable, the Romans cut of the ears and tails so the enemy could not grab them. Not because the beauty of it but purely to survive.
At first they were used as army dogs. Because of their trainability they where also trained as guard and defense dogs.
They could also be used for herding cattle. Here in laid the future for these dogs

Among the population the theory developed that cattle that was stressed before butchering, provided more tender and tasty meat.
Therefore butchers kept heavy dogs wich were to hunt the animals.
This became a popular amusement. They started to breed smaller and more agile molossers, beter known als Bullbiters.
There were two species of dogs bred. A larger and faster dog for hunting and a smaller, heavier dog for fighting.
The Danziger- and the Brabanter bullbiter. The Brabanter bullbiter is the ancestor of the modern boxer.
The British used the dog to breed the English Bulldog. The Germans however wanted to maintain the usability and there the boxer emerged.

In 1895 in Munchen E. König, R. Hoepner and F. Robert founded the first German boxerclub.
Mühlbauers Flocki, son of a white bulldog and a spotted boxerbitch became noted as the first German boxer in the pedigree.
His grantdaughter Meta von der Passage, a fat white (!) boxerbitch with a lot of bulldogblood in here vains, became the most important female ancestor of the race.
It wasn't until 1905 till all breeders agreed about a mandatory racial standard.
It would take another twenty years before the goal was set.
1.The German boxer had to be sturdy but not plump. He had to be agile but not light
2. The German boxer had to be a guard, service or work dog. A real ancient bullbiter and not a terrier or bulldog.
To reach that goal, everything what was up till than accepted from the bulldog or terrier heritage, was secluded out of boxerbreeding.
White, black or spotted dogs were secluded. Only the original colors of the ancient bullbiter were permitted:
yellow and striped.
The height of the withers also increased. In 1905 a height of 50 to 55 cm for a male dog was acceptable; since 1968 it already was 57 to 63 cm
Shortly, cropping the ears and tails, as was custom for a long time, is prohibited.
This prohibition has changed the looks of the bullbiter but has not affected his courage or character.
Boxers were and are fight dogs and they always had a long tail and lop ears.
